Is It Legal To Own A Silencer

Even with all the information readily available on the internet, people still ask all the time if it is legal to own, carry, or even be in the same room as a silencer (aka, sound suppressor). We are going to do our best to clear up these questions here.

Many people are under the impression that they need a “Class 3” license in order to own a suppressor. This is not true. If you live in a state where suppressor ownership is legal AND you can legally own a firearm, then you can buy a suppressor.

Silencer-Requirements

You must meet all 5 requirements in order to legally obtain a silencer.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to purchase a silencer from a dealer
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a silencer from an individual on a Form 4 to Form 4 transfer (contingent on state laws)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to possess a silencer as a beneficiary of a trust or as a member of a corporation (contingent on state laws)
  • You cannot be a felon
